Knowledge and technology transfer of a process development for the production of raw materials from hard-shell press cake for use in cosmetic products

  • Funding program: R&D guidelines of the state of Saxony-Anhalt, industrial research (Investitionsbank Sachsen-Anhalt)
  • Duration: October 1st, 2020 - June 30th, 2021

Starting position:

SanaBio GmbH is a medium-sized company and provider of services, raw materials, and finished products for retailers, cosmetics, food, and pharmaceuticals. The company operates worldwide and sets new standards for sustainable business, energy management, and social responsibility. SanaBio sees itself as a link between agricultural production and producers, traders, and consumers. The company is not only a supplier to industry and trade, but also a manufacturer of finished products and a sales specialist. SanaBio is a specialist in plant-based raw and auxiliary materials, as well as finished products from controlled organic cultivation.

The raw material base includes essential oils, extracts, oils, fats, and waxes as well as auxiliaries and additives for finished products in the areas of wood, natural cosmetics, food, dietary supplements, and health.

Rose hips, the fruits of the red dog roses, have a high health value because of their high vitamin C content. In addition to being used as food such as jam, tea, spreads, etc., rose hip seed oil is an aromatic oil that is used to treat the skin. A remainder of the largely de-oiled press cake remains when the oil is extracted. This has not been used any more so far, but still represents a source for further resource-efficient uses.

Target:

The aim and concept of SanaBio GmbH is the development of a process for the preparation of a hard-shell press cake, e.g., from the rosehip kernel pressing or other hard-shell press cakes of various types of berries to high-quality additives in cosmetic products. In particular, the properties (“hardness”) of the kernels combined with the various effects of the oil contained are now to be used in cosmetic applications and replace mineral oil-based plastics, for example in peeling and soap products, or toothpaste, creams, or gels.

For this purpose, the pressing and cleaning process is to be standardized with regard to further processing and suitable methods for comminution with accompanying analysis of the grain size and structure for the production and use of a peeling raw material are to be developed.
